PET DENTAL HEALTH PROGRAMS
Due to cooperative efforts of pet owners and veterinarians with increasing attention to preventive health care ( regular examinations, vaccinations, improved diets, parasite checks ) our pets life spans are
increasing. As a result, routine home dental care and regular professional cleaning, scaling and polishing of the teeth is becoming necessary to prevent periodontal diseases, infections, mouth pain and eventual tooth loss.
ROUTINE HOME CARE
Accustom your pet to having it's teeth cleaned as early in life as possible. Try using a washcloth or gauze pad, at first attempting only the front teeth, working up to cleaning other surfaces; eventually
using a small toothbrush (or finger brush we can supply); for those trying Rinses, a washcloth or soft gauze pad is good. Rinses can just be rubbed on outer surfaces a few times weekly. People toothpaste and home cleaning preparations are not advisable. Veterinary formulated toothpaste and dental rinses are safer, more palatable and provide better results with less effort.
Special chew treats are also available for cats, in addition to a rinse option. We would be happy to provide a demonstration. Two or three times weekly is usually sufficient.
DENTAL PROPHYLAXIS
Like people, pets should have regular professional teeth cleanings. Some may need this yearly, others less often based on age, breed and conformation, diet and health status.
