Taking temperature is best way; normal is 99.5 to 102.5(dog and cat). You can buy an inexpensive rectal thermometer. Feeling their heads or above the nose is not accurate.
I'm thinking of getting an new pet, any advice?
Unfortunately lots of it. Research your top choices based not only on species and breed, but consider size, maintenance(some pets require grooming, more activity,etc.). Also consider you lifestyle in terms of work hours, yard size, travel, finances, etc.
